This week at Immanuel from The Story: Chapter Six: Wandering
Our journey through The Story this week covers a lot of material from the Bible: Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Chapter 6 of The Story follows the story line of the Israel’s “road trip” from Mt. Sinai, where they had camped for a year while building the tabernacle and learning about the lifestyle regulations Moses had received from God. Now they head north to Kadesh, located on the border of Canaan. Moses sends 12 spies (one from each tribe) to Canaan to spy out the land and bring back a report. 10 of the spies bring an “evil report”. Only Joshua and Caleb report that God will be with them as they enter the land. The people believe the 10 and God informs them that they will remain in the wilderness for 40 years because of their lack of trust in him.
In these stories we see the “high bar” of God’s judgment and “wide arms” of God’s mercy at play. When will they, and when will we learn that trusting in God to lead us, even when things look impossible, is what his covenant partner is called to do. Thankfully, in the fullness of time, a partner came into this world, trusting God in all things. His name is Jesus. Do you know him? Do you follow him? Do you trust him?
