This is a sample of a “lesson” for an adult discipleship idea that the Immanuel Discipleship Team is thinking about. Our idea is to build Bible knowledge, theological knowledge, and Christian living principles from the sermons preached by Pastors John and Zach. These lessons can be used for private study, for one on one mentoring, or for small groups or classes. The comments part of the blog can even be used to ask questions, comment, discuss, etc. If you like this approach or have other suggestions, please comment about it.

Bible Basics on Hebrews

Where in the Bible is Hebrews?

Bible Doctrine

The Person and Work of Christ is the main doctrinal focus.
What is meant by the following terms:
incarnation, trinity, deity of Christ, humanity of Christ, Christology
Belgic Confession: Articles 8, 9, 10, 18, 19
Heidelberg Catechism: Q&A 14, 15, 16, 17, 18
Fully God, fully man, one person, two natures. The church spent several hundred years hammering this out. Is it important? Why?

Review of key points from sermon
Three key teachings (list the 7 points from the text under these 3 categories)

Jesus is fully divine.
Jesus’s connection to Creation is universal in scope.
Jesus’s work changed human history.

Application/Discussion Questions

A. One of the issues that the original hearers faced was the temptation to “go back”. What are some ways in which you are tempted to give up on your faith?
B. The key message of Hebrews is that Christ is the better way. How do the 7 characteristics of Christ found in the opening verses of Hebrews address this temptation to give up?
C. How can you use this teaching in an evangelistic context? A counseling context?
D. What does the “in these last days” phrase teach us about the New Testament’s view of the end times?

Coming Up This Week – December 12, 2011

This Sunday at Immanuel Pastor John will continue a series of Advent messages on how the incarnation of Jesus informs the ministry and practices of the church. This Sunday we will look at the teaching of scripture in Matthew 1: 18-25. Here we find the story of Joseph, who was engaged to be married to Mary. Joseph decides not to expose Mary to public disgrace (vs. 19), as the law required. The OT Suffering Servant passage in Isaiah 42 lies behind this text. Joseph is following the heart of God’s law which calls for his people to defend the defenseless in their time of need. In doing so we see that God has raised Joseph up for such a time as this. He, like Mary, is a God-fearing person, and is called and led by God to act on God’s behalf in this special time of God’s revealing grace in the birth of Jesus.

The Beach is closed. I say that with some joy and sadness. Yesterday was so much fun. It was a day of celebration including Jesus ascension into heaven! We have a Mondo God! WOOT WOOT-What a perfect ending. We let the kids take the lead and sing on stage and pick the songs. They raised 227 dollars for Ensenada, Mexico that’s a lot of paint. We ask for continued prayers as now we have taught the children to go out and tell others about Jesus. They have answered Big questions and have a Big task before them; but children never cease to amaze me with what they can do. We will now sit back and see the handiwork of God. Just like the double rainbow we could see at the dinner Thursday night. Thanks to all those that have made this possible you are all an answer to so many prayers. SonSurf Day 4

What can I say but come and see. Tonight you have a chance to see these kid’s faces as they sing so many great songs for you. Dinner is at 5:30 and the Program at 7pm. Today we talked about the Prodigal son and learned how God forgives us when we mess up. I found a new song that they love that talks about Jesus being the way to be part of God’s family. So bring your family and enjoy the fellowship but don’t forget that these kids now know the answers to 4 BIG Questions just ask them.

Water is definitely the theme for the week as the Wacky Whales (4-5-6^th) get wet every day. The Swooping Seagulls(2^nd-3^rd) are flying into fun with Skipper Skip and Surfing Sam keeping smiles across their faces. The feet of many were washed as they learned about Jesus washing the disciples feet. It was another memorable day where TJ (Joel W.) was stung by a jellyfish and saved. The family theme even included a happy birthday song to Judy. The only way to be part of Gods family is through Jesus. The family theme will continue with the dinner and program tomorrow night.

Day 2:

The pool of Kooky Clownfish keep growing – that is amazing. We had extra help today but not tomorrow if anyone wants to hang with the fish. Our total number today was 94!! Praise God. The stars of the skit today were Brenna and Joel cracking up the kids with their drills not going too well. The kids are “catching” on to the “catchy” music. We know that even when we are afraid of anything we can trust in God who is our trustworthy Savior. Tomorrow we will find the way to have more, Bible lesson, music, games, crafts and fun!

SonSurf Beach Bash Day One

Wow what a start we had 80 kids today. That is a praise God start. We learned about meeting up with Jesus. The kids loved the songs and skit. After a little extra energy you could feel the excitement build. The skit was hilarious and included an impromptu broken chair thanks to Dan Ausema’s acting!! Prayers for tomorrow to go as smoothly as today even if our numbers keep soaring. I wish I could add the sound of the preschoolers barking like Seals for their Silly Seals cheer!

This Week at Immanuel

This coming Sunday the message is based on I Samuel 25. David asks Nabal for some provisions for his men but Nabal refuses. While seeking revenge Nabal’s wife, Abigail, prepares a gift of food urging David not to act foolishly. David receives her gift of food, and the greater gift of the “good news” that he is not the sum of his anger over being rebuffed, but he is a child of God, with a God-given purpose to his life. Abigail becomes for David an symbol of the beauty of God himself, who comes to us with the gift of a new identity, rooted in him, not rooted in our situations. We need to face life’s “foolishness” not with “foolishness” of our own, but with words and actions that arise out of the new heart given us by God. Beauty overcomes ugliness. The essence of beauty is the suffering Christ, whose beauty shines forth in his scars. Abigail reminds David of the better way, the beautiful way of not returning evil for evil, but remaining in word and deed, the person God said you are, chosen, with kingwork to do, out of a God-centered imagination.

VBS at Immanuel: Day 4

Wow the VBS program went well even after the visit from the Firetruck! The kids sang from their hearts and remember the motions better than I do. Dinner was fun to see so many from Immanuel and visitors eating together on the lawn. Thanks so much to the fellowship team. One more day of our voyage out on High Seas. God’s word is for everyone. Read along with the end of Acts 2. Your faithfulness extends to every generation, as enduring as the Earth you created – Psalm 119:90. It is great to see the help from the 7th grader to those retired enjoying and teaching God’s children – THANK YOU CREW!
